VfL Bochum shoots Dusseldorf – and displaces HSV

2. Bundesliga

The Ruhrpottklub won the Monday evening game against the relegated Bundesliga – and thus underpinned its ambitions for promotion. The HSV now has the disadvantage.

VfL Bochum clearly won their home game against Bundesliga relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf. At the end of the Monday evening game in the Ruhrstadion it was 5-0 for the host. The goals were scored by Danny Blum from the penalty spot (6th minute), Robert Tesche (58th), Robert Zulj (73rd, 74th) and Milos Pantovic (90th + 2).

Fortunas Kristoffer Peterson saw the red card before Bochum’s first hit for an emergency brake with no chance of the ball. In the 84 minutes that followed, the Düsseldorf team had significant problems when they were outnumbered and hardly got any relief moments outside their own half.

“We know that we can play good football. But the work is done first. We delivered a good team performance,” said Zulj and added, looking at the jump to second place: “The table is a snapshot.” Düsseldorf’s goal scorer Rouwen Hennings, on the other hand, was served: “It starts badly for us. It is again in the away game that we have a red card and a penalty against us. That is bitter. That doesn’t make it easier.”

Bochum takes a long time before it can convert superiority into something countable

After the red card, Rösler switched from three to four defensive chains. Although the Bochumers had much more possession of the ball, they were unable to capitalize on their excess for a long time, despite some chances. The agile Blum (29th) missed the greatest opportunity to make it 2-0 before the break when he ran up to Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier, but hit the ball over the goal. Düsseldorf pulled back a long way and developed little risk of scoring with occasional counterattacks.

Even after the move, VfL dominated, but initially had few opportunities against the massive defensive. Often the game forward was too slow and cumbersome. In addition, Kastenmeier proved to be a sure source of support and was also on the post with a deflected Blum shot (57th). Only one minute later, Tesche found the gap after a corner from Blum and scored the 2-0 redeeming for VfL. After that, the Bochumers played the game to the end and even increased it with the double hit from Zulj and the hit from Pantovic.
