The Zurich health director calls on the Federal Council to tighten the measures this Friday. The hospitals no longer have any capacity and the red line has been crossed.
The Zurich health director Natalie Rickli calls on the Federal Council to tighten the measures on Friday.
Specifically, Rickli is calling for restaurants, culture, leisure and entertainment to be closed – before Christmas.
The health system is overloaded, said Rickli. Therefore, the canton of Zurich could not accept any ski accident.
“We have no more time.” This is what the Zurich health director Natalie Rickli (SVP) says in an interview with the Tamedia newspapers (paid articles). She calls on the Federal Council to tighten the measures again on Friday. There is no time to postpone until after the holidays.
Because: The Zurich hospitals are at the limit. In the interview, Rickli points out that the Zurich hospital directors sounded the alarm on Tuesday. On Monday there were 535 people with corona disease in the hospital in Zurich, 99 of them in the intensive care unit on Sunday.
There were just three beds free in the University Hospital Zurich. For the first time, treatments for patients with other life-threatening diseases had to be postponed. «Our healthcare system must not be overloaded. That was the red line that should not be crossed. So you have to act now. We have to put an end to the scalpel, ”says Rickli.
Is the lockdown coming now?
Does that mean the lockdown is coming? Not necessarily for Rickli: “That does not necessarily have to result in a total lockdown, but certain industries such as gastronomy, culture, leisure and the entertainment sector must be safely closed.”
It is clear to Health Director Rickli that the Federal Council must act now. “I ask the Federal Council to make a binding decision on Friday.” At the same time, the health director gave the canton of Graubünden a rejection. This had suggested that Zurich ski tourists who have an accident on the slopes in Graubünden are treated in Zurich hospitals.
“The Zurich hospitals will not be able to deal with skiing accidents in the near future,” explains Rickli. That also means for her: At the moment it is not the right time to go skiing in the mountains.
