“Would have liked to experience Christmas”
Germany reports over 500 deaths for the first time
For the first time, Germany recorded more than 500 deaths within one day. With 512 reported deaths, the state authorities recorded by far the highest daily increase since the beginning of the pandemic. The previous record comes from last Thursday, when there were 431 deaths within one day. The current increase is also well above the 487 deaths from the morning count of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
In view of a new maximum number of corona deaths, the federal and state governments had previously decided to extend the conditions. During the deliberations between the 16 Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel, the participants agreed to extend the closure of restaurants and hotels until January 10th. CSU boss Markus Söder warned against taking the high numbers only as a statistical variable. “That is an incredible number of fates of people who would have liked to celebrate Christmas,” he said. Söder insisted that many of the victims still had a long life ahead of them. It is “our absolute obligation” to stay on the ball.
19,000 new infections within 20 hours
In terms of new infections, Germany has a total of around 19,000 additional cases. As can be seen from the information from the state authorities evaluated by ntv.de, 18,964 new cases were added within 24 hours. The number of reported coronavirus infections in Germany has risen to 1,096,341. The number of deaths related to infection rose to 17,412. Around 302,200 people are currently infected.
The infection rate (R value) is given by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) as 0.84 (previous day: 0.94). This means that one hundred people infect an average of 84 more people with Sars-Cov-2. The 7-day R-value is currently 0.89 and has not changed compared to the previous day. The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.
Highest incidence: Saxony leads country comparison
In their daily reports, six of 16 federal states recorded four-digit growth in the evening: North Rhine-Westphalia leads the field with 3354 newly registered infections. In the list of federal states with the highest daily values, Bavaria (3325), Baden-Württemberg (3160), Saxony (2114), Hesse (1368) and Lower Saxony (1126) follow. Measured by the number of inhabitants, Saxony is just like the day before the country with the greatest daily increase in new infections. The Free State also leads with the 7-day incidence with 319.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
However, the latest RKI report provided a small sign of hope for a turnaround: After that, the rate of those who tested positive fell – for the first time since August.
