19 – Oxfam: Pandemic exacerbates global inequality

According to a report by the development aid organization Oxfam, the corona pandemic is worsening social inequality worldwide.

The  1,000 richest people could have recovered their losses in the crisis in just nine months. In contrast, it could take the poorest more than a decade to recover from the economic fallout from the pandemic. For the first time since statistical records began over a century ago, there is a threat of worsening economic inequality in almost all countries.

295 economic researchers from 79 countries were interviewed for the report. Oxfam published the study on the occasion of the start of the World Economic Forum, which is taking place digitally for the first time instead of Davos.

This requires social security systems that are accessible to everyone and a greater focus on the common good of the economy. Corporations and the super-rich have to make a contribution to overcome the crisis.
