The health authorities reported 26,391 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute within one day.
In addition, 1,070 other deaths were recorded. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 population is around 122 new infections. It is highest in Saxony with around 270, and lowest in Bremen with 74.
In the past week, around 790,000 laboratory tests for the corona virus were registered across Germany. That was another significant decrease compared to the Christmas week. In mid-December, around 1.6 million tests were recorded in one week.
The share of positive results in all laboratory tests rose to 16 percent over the turn of the year. In the two previous weeks, the positive rate had been around 12 percent.
