Coronavirus: Airbus sends 500 Hamburg employees to quarantine

After cases of corona infection, around 500 employees at the aircraft manufacturer Airbus in Hamburg were sent into quarantine. This affects not only the direct contact persons of the 21 employees who tested positive for Corona, but the entire shift, said a spokesman for the Hamburg health authority on Sunday. After the corona cases became known, they have been in quarantine since Friday.
So far it is unclear whether it is a mutated and possibly highly contagious corona variant, said the spokesman. This would have to clarify a genome sequencing, which was also ordered. But it takes up to seven days for the result to be available. “We won’t be able to say anything about this until the middle of the week at the earliest.”

Airbus also confirmed the occurrence of several corona infections in a production area at the Hamburg location. “ The  appropriate measures such as immediate serial tests and quarantine were initiated immediately in accordance with the processes provided for this purpose, in cooperation with the authorities,” said a company spokesman. © The  cause of the cases is still being investigated.

With more than 12,000 employees, Airbus is Hamburg’s largest industrial employer. ©

The  plant is the largest German location for the aviation industry and the second largest after the main French plant in Toulouse.
