Coronavirus in Germany: Pediatricians are demanding vaccinations for children

06.33 a.m .: Germany’s pediatricians are demanding the fastest possible corona vaccinations for children so that daycare centers and schools can be reopened. Children and young people had a particularly difficult time in the pandemic from the start: “That they are now lagging behind when it comes to vaccinations – and the schools are therefore staying closed – is therefore doubly bitter,” said the President of the Professional Association of Pediatricians (BVKJ), Thomas Fischbach, the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. “That is why we expect that vaccination for children will be accelerated in order to finally relax the situation at schools and daycare centers.”

Great Britain reports more than 1,000 corona deaths for the first time since April

6:23 p.m .: For the first time since April, the UK has recorded more than 1,000 corona deaths within 24 hours. The British Ministry of Health announced that 1041 deaths were reported on Wednesday. This increases the number of deaths since the pandemic began to 77,346. In addition, a new high was recorded with 62,322 new infections.

With more than 2.8 million cases of infection and more than 77,000 corona fatalities, Great Britain is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. A mutation of the coronavirus is currently rampant in the Kingdom, which, according to initial findings, is significantly more contagious than the virus in its previous form.

When Söder decides to lockdown, the families romp around on the toboggan hill: the police send them home

3:34 p.m .: After snowfall in the night, there was a rush to the city’s toboggan mountains on Epiphany. In the Pasing district, the police had to instruct 150 people and send them home. There was just too much going on, distances could not be maintained, said a police spokesman on Wednesday. The tobogganists found it “not that tingling”, but were cooperative, added the official.

According to the police, people are walking in the snow across the city on the holiday. In the Olympiapark, in the English Garden, in the Luitpoldpark and the Hirschgarten, tobogganists and walkers are piling up. Families also romped around tobogganing at the Bavarian state parliament on Wednesday.

The officials said that toboggan mountains and ice rinks would be particularly watched. Many ice surfaces have not yet been released. According to the police, a person broke in on the Nymphenburg Canal on Tuesday.

Söder resigns Minister of Health Huml – first case of coronavirus mutation detected in Bavaria – carnival holidays canceled

12.13 p.m .: As expected, the Bavarian cabinet extended and tightened the corona lockdown in Bavaria that had existed since mid-December until the end of January. The Council of Ministers approved the decision of the federal and state governments from the previous day in a special session on Wednesday. “The lockdown will be extended and deepened in some places,” said Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) in Munich. He also announced that State Secretary for Health Klaus Holetschek (CSU) is to become the new Bavarian Health Minister. The previous health minister Melanie Huml (CSU) will move to the state chancellery.

Holetschek has recently proven to be a doer, also in cooperation with the municipalities in Bavaria, said Söder after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday in Munich. “This is a sovereign decision that is discussed with everyone,” said Söder. I think the line-up is the best.

The Bamberg native Huml, herself a doctor, had already made an unhappy figure in some phases of the anti-corona fight. In August, when there was a serious breakdown in the corona tests propagated by Söder for return travelers and those who tested positive had not found out about their test results, there had already been calls for resignation against Huml.

As a result of the new resolutions, not only will large parts of the trade, the hotel and catering industry remain closed in Bavaria from next Monday, January 11, but also schools and kindergartens despite the end of the Christmas holidays. Emergency care is to be set up for day-care centers, students from levels 1 to 6, special needs students and children with disabilities. In addition, there should be the opportunity to look after children privately – but only in a permanent other contact family, as Söder said.

Distance teaching should be offered in all schools and grades. Depending on the incidence of infection, a return to face-to-face teaching – staggered according to grade – is aimed for from February. The carnival holidays should be canceled as things stand. The holiday week, which is actually planned from February 15 to 19, will not take place, during which lessons can be made up that had been canceled due to the pandemic, said Söder.

In addition, from Monday, people in regions with an incidence of more than 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days will have restricted freedom of movement. This means that for private reasons they are only allowed to stay a maximum of 15 kilometers around their place of residence – but shopping is excluded from this. This is primarily intended to prevent tourist excursions.

In order to reduce the number of contacts and thus the risk of possible infection with the coronavirus, meetings with a maximum of one person from another household are permitted from Monday. So far, this has been the case for up to five people from another household.

In addition, the country manager announced that the mutated form of the coronavirus, which has increasingly occurred in Great Britain, was also detected in Bavaria for the first time. The Ministry of Health had informed him the previous evening about the case of an infected woman returning from the UK. “This mutated virus is of great concern because it spreads more aggressively,” said Söder. The mutated virus means an additional risk in the already tense situation.
