The coronavirus has had a major impact on business.
In online trading, there was an increase of 30 percent.
Migros recorded consolidated sales of 29.8 billion francs in 2020. That is an increase of 4 percent. In the retail trade it was up 7.2 percent and 24.2 billion francs – adjusted for the sales of Globus and Depot. Online trade recorded an increase of 31 percent to almost 3 billion francs.
It is the first time that Migros online retail has grown by over 10 percent within a year.
The industry leader Digitec Galaxus is a high-flyer in online retail: sales there are 1.7 billion francs. That is 56.4 percent more than in 2019.
More demand thanks to the pandemic
Because of the pandemic, there was a higher demand in the trade, it said in a message. Business areas such as travel, gastronomy as well as fitness and leisure offers, however, had suffered significant losses. Overall, however, CEO Fabrice Zumbrunnen is satisfied: “Migros coped with the extreme year well.”
According to Zumbrunnen, the positive result is due to the extraordinary commitment of the employees.
The retailer paid employees who were on duty during the lockdown in spring up to 500 francs in bonuses. Other Swiss companies such as Coop and Swiss Post have also paid out such bonuses.
Minus bei Coop
At the competitor Coop there was a slight minus this year, but sales of 30.2 billion francs were slightly above the Migros result. Coop was able to place strong in online trading.
The increase in sales in online retail was 35.2 percent.
The online supermarket Coop.ch made an increase of 42.6 percent.
