Cup out despite the majority
Real Madrid embarrassed themselves against third division clubs
Real Madrid embarrassed themselves with a 1: 2 after extra time at the third division soccer club CD Alcoyano and were eliminated in the third round of the Spanish Cup. Coach Zinedine Zidane spared some stars in Alcoy at the beginning, Karim Benzema (67th minute), Eden Hazard or Kroos (98th minute) were only substituted in during the game.
Eder Militao had given the Whites the lead shortly before the break (45th minute) before Jose Solbes Jorda (80th minute) to equalize the blatant underdog. Juan Antonio Casanova Vidal (115th minute) then caused a sensation in stoppage time. At the time of the decisive goal, Real also played in the majority after Ramon Lopez Olivan had seen yellow-red (110th minute).
Zidane took responsibility for the defeat after the game. “It’s not a shame or anything. The se are things that happen in a footballer’s career and I will take responsibility for them. We will keep working,” said the Frenchman. “We have to remember that we are still in the league and in the Champions League. We have to be focused because we can still do something.”
Arch-rivals Atletico Madrid are kicked out against UE Cornella
Previously, city rivals Atletico Madrid had embarrassed themselves in the cup. In the second main round, the Rojiblancos failed two weeks ago at third division club UE Cornella 0: 1 (0: 1) and thus said goodbye to the title race early. Adrian Jimenez scored the goal of the day (7th minute) against Atletico, which has won the Copa del Rey ten times so far – most recently in 2013. Ricard Sanchez saw yellow-red (63rd minute) among the guests.
Atletico spared some stars. Luis Suarez, Koke, Marcos Llorente and Yannick Carrasco were not in the squad. In the league, coach Diego Simeone’s team leads with 41 points ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid (37), who have played two more games.
