Matthias Walkner had to bury his ambitions to win the Dakar Rally in the desert sand after the 2nd stage.

The -Salzburg KTM rider lost over two hours on Monday after a technical defect shortly before the first waypoint at kilometer 46 and fell back to the end of the 95-rider motorcycle field. Walkner is 2:15 hours behind leader Joan Barreda.

After the 685 km long stage from Bisha to Wadi Ad-Dawasir, of which 457 km are part of the special stage, Walkner will report exactly what happened.

With third place, Walkner had a successful start to the desert rally. A podium or even victory now seems out of reach after the problems. After the 1st stage, Walkner’s Australian colleague Toby Price leads 23 seconds ahead of Kevin Benavides (ARG / Honda).
