Education – Berlin – Berlin GEW demands high school diploma if necessary without exams – education

Berlin (dpa / bb) –  The  education union GEW in Berlin has spoken out in favor that the Abitur can be taken this school year without exams if necessary. “In times of the corona pandemic, special regulations must also apply to the Abitur,” said the chairman of the GEW Berlin, Tom Erdmann, on Thursday. “Preliminary work that has already been done and that already make up the largest part of the grade is sufficient as a basis for assessing the Abitur grade.” ©

The  prerequisite is nationwide recognition of the qualifications.

At a switching conference on Thursday, the education ministers of the federal states agreed that the qualifications acquired in this Corona school year “are equivalent to those of earlier and later years and are mutually recognized”. ©

The  joint decision confirms that the Abitur examinations should take place.

A spokesman for the Berlin education administration said on Thursday that the subject of the Abitur exams is currently being coordinated with Brandenburg, among others. Last year there had already been a long discussion in Berlin about the question of whether the Abitur and other exams in schools should take place as planned in view of the Corona crisis.

The  GEW has no idea about postponing the exams to vacation. “We reject an extension of the school year into the summer vacation,” said Erdmann. That would be at the expense of the students and the employees. “©

The  workload has already exceeded the pain threshold in the past Corona months,” criticized the Berlin GEW chairman. “For the past nine months, the teachers have been working practically.”

The  GEW demanded that the Berlin Senator for Education Sandra Scheeres (SPD) should sit down at a table with the employee representatives in order to talk about how to deal with the Corona crisis.
