The agreement between the Chancellor and the country leaders on Tuesday to set new quality standards for wearing masks in public is also confusing this special market in the capital region. Hundreds of manufacturers who made small series of everyday masks out of cotton can pack. But anyone who can manufacture (or at least import) protective masks in high industrial standards and scales can expect huge business.
The small factory belongs to three brothers who, seven months ago, were first confronted with the question of whether they could set up certified mask production from scratch: Robert, Mataty and Aday Erdinc all obviously have an entrepreneurial gene in their genes , but until now they have never had anything to do with masks.
The re are actually five of them – one of the sisters, like Matay Erdinc, works in the precious metal industry, the other is a graduate in administration. In the meantime, however, their joint Your Mask GmbH plays the central role in their lives. When they presented the workshop of their production facility in Saalmannstrasse to the CDU European MP Hildegard Bentele (she is a member of the health committee in the European Parliament), there was nothing to indicate that it was nothing more than an empty hall in March of last year is.
“When someone asked me if I could make such masks, I first asked,” says Matay Erdinc. At this point in time there was a so-called open house procedure by the federal government: anyone who produces certified masks at a fixed price receives the order. But he had missed the tender, and he didn’t have any machines either. But when he discovered that you can buy and sell masks on the open market, he ventured into the business without a government mandate.
The n he researched where he could buy the raw materials for mask production in Germany – because of the safe supply of the material, he did not want to get involved with foreign suppliers. Before production started, he hired a quality manager. In August he got the certification. Right from the start, his customers were pharmacies, hospitals and other companies.
The y produce 600,000 masks a week. That is to be stepped up where these masks are now becoming mandatory equipment when leaving the house. Isn’t it a risk to enter a new industry out of nowhere? “Sure,” says Matay Erdinc, “but the only education is life itself”.

The popular FFP2 masks are not part of the range. Surgical masks are also among the medical breathing masks that are to be worn in shops and in local traffic. That is why the sales figures at Zühlsdorf have been increasing since this week – mainly through own acquisitions. “After the political decisions, we approached regional partners such as pharmacies, hospitals and small and medium-sized companies,” says project manager Björn Demme. “We offer quality, certified type IIR masks with DIN-compliant properties.” He is therefore annoyed that the Senate has been exporting mainly from China in recent months. “
The camps are full now. We could deliver directly to the district office around the corner from me. However, their hands are tied, ”says Demme. He has already tried to contact the responsible senate administration – so far without success.
