- In the US state of Florida, Trump supporters in politics would like to see the name of their former president on public facilities.
- The first attempt at Palm Beach Airport has now failed.
- Now the largest highway in Florida is to be renamed after Donald Trump.
The advance of a politician Naming Palm Beach International Airport after Donald Trump, is causing controversy in Florida.
The y wanted to honor their former president, who regularly traveled to his summer home in Mar-a-Lago via this airport.
The move was led by Vice-Party leader of the Republicans in Florida, Christian Ziegler. According to reports, Donald Trump had wanted an airport with his name anyway. Ziegler is, however, a commissioner in County Sarasota – and therefore not responsible for Palm Beach. Local County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay also let him know: Ziegler should name facilities in his own county, not hers.
Resistance to Trump Airport with success
The y are afraid of the impact on tourism in their region: “When people hear Palm Beach, they think of beaches, equestrian sports and in some cases our agricultural products.” “Trump International,” according to McKinlay, is a more appropriate name for one of the ex-head’s golf courses, but not for an airport.
Reports of Trump’s desire to have an airport have been around since December 2020. The re are currently eight major airports in the US named after presidents, including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy.
The US president would also have liked to see an aircraft carrier bearing his name. In Florida, his fans continue to fight for projects with the Trump brand: Highway 27 is to be called “President Donald J. Trump Highway” in the future after a move by the Republicans. It remains to be seen whether this will come through.
