Defending champion Denmark booked their ticket through a never endangered 39:19 (23:10) against the underdog Democratic Republic of the Congo.
European champions Spain won the hard-fought 27:26 (14:11) against Poland and are also through. Co-favorite Croatia qualified for the second group stage with a 28:20 (12:11) win over Angola.
Japan trembles to get ahead
Japan with the former national coach Dagur Sigurdsson lost to Qatar 29:31 (16:15), is still at one point and has to tremble to get ahead. Three teams from each group of four make it into the main round.
