Germany has agreed to put 30 percent of land and sea areas under protection by 2030.
Chancellor Merkel announced this at the “One Planet Summit” in Paris, which was partly digitally held. With this commitment, the federal government joins the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, an alliance of more than 50 governments. Merkel also called on other states to join the alliance. She stressed that efforts should be stepped up to preserve biodiversity. French President Macron, who initiated the international conference together with the UN and the World Bank, announced that his country would already meet the target in the coming year.
