Manchester City have finally made it into the race for the English Football Championship. Coach Pep Guardiola’s team overtook champions Liverpool with a 4-0 (1-0) win over Crystal Palace on Sunday evening and took second place in the Premier League table. Goalscorer Ilkay Gündogan tweeted after the final whistle: “This is the Man City that we know.”

Man City are only two points behind leaders Manchester United, but have played one game less than the record champions and local rivals. John Stones (26th / 68th minute) with a brace and German international Gündogan (56th) with a goal from more than 16 meters made everything clear for the superior Citizens in the Etihad Stadium. Raheem Sterling (88.) made the final score with a perfect free kick shortly before the end.
Behind leaders Man United and pursuers Man City, Leicester City is in third place, tied with the “Citizens”. Liverpool FC, who played 0-0 against United on Sunday, slipped to fourth place. Tottenham Hotspur are fifth after a 3-1 win over Sheffield United.

The Reds had missed to regain the top of the table in the top game against record champions and direct rivals Man United. 
The two arch-rivals parted goalless on Sunday in Anfield. For Liverpool it was the fourth league game in a row without a win and the third without a goal.

Jürgen Klopp’s team had more play and fired more shots on goal, but acted too harmlessly overall. Especially in the first half of the game, there were hardly any compelling chances. After the half-time break, however, both teams became more dangerous in attack and had a good chance of victory. Paul Pogba failed with a shot at Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in the 83rd minute. So it stayed at 0-0, with which neither of the two teams was really satisfied.

“We’re a bit disappointed that we didn’t get the three points at home,” said Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a similar statement. “Given the chances we had, it was a missed opportunity,” said the coach. After all, Solskjaer’s “Red Devils” are still in first place with a two-point lead and have also been unbeaten in 16 league games. Defending champion Liverpool, on the other hand, urgently need to overcome their goal doldrums in order not to be left behind in the race for the championship.
