The coronavirus mutation, which first appeared in Great Britain, could also have left its traces in Vienna’s wastewater.
According to – officially not confirmed – information at least one pre-test revealed a suspicion of the variant. A test by gene sequencing is reportedly still pending, as the APA learned.
British Covid mutation maybe already in Vienna’s wastewater
In Vienna, wastewater is screened as part of a joint project between the main sewage treatment plant, the Technical University and AGES. In the office of City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ), they were initially not informed of the latest test results. “We have not received any information about this,” was stressed at the APA request.
In Vienna, residents of a care facility could already be infected with the B.1.1.7 mutation. At least there is a corresponding suspicion. Of 101 residents, 42 fell ill with Covid after the holidays. The final proof is still pending, the sequencing should not be completed until the beginning of next week.
