How did the constellations in AFC and NFC come about?

The  competitive structure of the NFL is based on the division into two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).

Both are divided into four divisions each. A total of 32 teams from eight divisions are fighting for a place in the playoffs in the regular season. Each team plays 16 games.

Both conferences have their own playoffs. Since this season, seven teams (previously six) have qualified in each conference and are placed in a seeding list based on their balance sheet in the regular season: © www.de24.news

The  division winner with the best record goes to # 1 (NFC: Packers, AFC: Chiefs) set, the division winner with the worst record goes to # 4 (NFC: Washington FT, AFC: Titans) set.

The  team with the best record is at # 5 (NFC: Buccaneers, AFC: Ravens) set that with the weakest at # 7 (NFC: Bears, AFC: Colts). This makes it possible that the seven most successful teams in a conference do not automatically move into the playoffs.

In the case of the same victory-defeat balance, various criteria decide on the distribution of places – from a direct comparison to the conference balance to the strength of schedule.

Seeding lists of the conferences

NFC: #1 Packers (13-3), #2 Saints (12-4), #3 Seahawks (12-4), #4 Washington (7-9), #5 Buccaneers (11-5), #6 Rams (10-6), #7 Bears (8-8)

AFC: #1 Chiefs (14-2), #2 Bills (13-3), #3 Steelers (12-4), #4 Titans (11-5), #5 Ravens (11-5), #6 Browns (11-5), #7 Colts (11-5)
