Toyota celebrates a double win / WRC in the Principality of Monaco

Sébastien Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia have won the legendary Monte-Carlo Rally for the eighth time, and team-mates Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin ensured the Toyota one-two.

The  win is also the 50th for Ogier and Ingrassia in the FIA World Rally Championship

and thus only the second participant to reach this mark. This is the first time that the Ogier / Ingrassia team in the Toyota Yaris WRC has won the most prestigious event in the World Rally Championship (WRC). It’s been on the podium every year since its debut in 2017. It is the fourth Monte Carlo Rally victory in Toyota’s history, the 30th WRC success.

The  Monte-Carlo Rally lived up to its reputation as the most demanding event on the WRC calendar with special challenges for this year’s edition. A changed schedule to comply with coronavirus restrictions in France meant some phases of ice and snow took place before sunrise. © www.de24.news

The  Toyota team led the rally early Friday morning from stage three, with Rovanperä, Ogier and then Evans taking turns taking the lead over the course of the longest day of the rally. At his home game, Ogier took the lead back almost with an act of violence in the first stage on Saturday. He used a 13 second lead over Evans until the final day, when he won three of the four stages, including the power stage at the end of the rally, to perfectly begin the defense of his title.

Evans is also making a strong start to his championship campaign with second place, while Rovanperä is starting his second season at the highest level of the rally after battling for the podium in such a challenging event. © www.de24.news

The  puncture on Sunday’s first stage contributed to Rovanperä missing the podium, but he finished the Power Stage with the second fastest time.

With Evans the third fastest place, the team secured the first three places on the Power Stage, which from this season also brings bonus points for the manufacturers’ championship. Together with the double victory in the rally, this means that the team will get maximum points from the opening lap – a dream start for the new team boss Jari-Matti Latvala, who wants to build on the work of his predecessor Tommi Mäkinen.

With Takamoto Katsuta, four Yaris WRC drivers made it into the top six.

Team boss Jari-Matti Latvala: “I am very, very proud of the team. What a fantastic result. For my first rally in this role and immediately we have a one-two-four finish and Takamoto in sixth place as well as the maximum points in the power stage, it’s unbelievable! I have a fantastic team and we have the best drivers. © www.de24.news

The y had good speed from the start of the rally and later we saw some very dominant stages from Seb which ensured his victory. Elfyn ran a really consistent run with no mistakes all weekend. Kalle also had the chance to fight for the podium before unfortunately having that puncture that morning that set him back, but fourth place is still a very good start to his year. All in all, it is an amazing result with which the season begins. “

Sébastien Ogier: “This is a perfect start to the season. Watching this rally as a child has always dreamed of one day becoming a driver. If I only had one record, I would certainly take this one. It means a lot to me and that’s why I was very emotional on the podium. © www.de24.news

The  Yaris WRC this weekend was fantastic: I had such a good feeling in the car. I think it was a good decision to do another year. © www.de24.news

The  first stage in the morning was amazing: there were so many changes in grip and it was impossible to read the track because it was like black ice. © www.de24.news

The  ice spies went through the exam two hours earlier and there was nothing there at the time, just a bit of frost. So it was really surprising. It’s never easiest to get a head start, especially on this rally, but we did it. “

Elfyn Evans: “It was a tough last day with very challenging conditions, like it was all weekend. Maybe I didn’t apply enough pressure to really challenge Seb for victory, he was very, very good this weekend. It’s his home rally so it would always be difficult but that’s thanks to him. And as a team, it’s a fantastic start to the year. We can be happy with the points, but of course you always want more and hopefully next time I can be a little stronger. I don’t think I felt like this this weekend. Maybe at the beginning of the year it was better not to risk everything to try to win, but we know if we want to fight for the title we have to do that later in the year. However, I think we have a really strong car and a very strong team. “

Kalle Rovanperä: “I would say the conditions were really extreme in the morning. © www.de24.news

The  first stage was very difficult with the ice and then we had snow in the second. I think I was a little unlucky with the puncture, but sometimes it’s a rally too. We had a good time on the Power Stage. I was a bit surprised because I didn’t really hit the max. I’ve only increased the pace a little and it was good to have the right points from there too. Overall, it was a really nice weekend for me because I didn’t drive that many kilometers on asphalt last year. We were much faster than at this rally last year and also more consistent. So it was a good weekend with just a little bad luck. “
