The renowned virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit reacted to the currently resolved corona restrictions in Germany in a video interview with t-online. “You have to do a lot more to better protect vulnerable people,” said Schmidt-Chanasit in the video format “Ask me” with regard to the recent tightening of the lockdown and sees a need to catch up in old people’s and nursing homes. In addition, Schmidt-Chanasit is critical of the rigorous closings of schools and daycare centers and gives insights into how virologists coordinate with one another and whether Angela Merkel has already communicated with him.

Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit is a virologist and head of virus diagnostics at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg. There he researches new infectious diseases with a focus on viruses that can be transmitted by mosquitoes. Schmidt-Chanasit holds the chair for arbovirology at the University of Hamburg. He himself studied human medicine at the Charité in Berlin. Schmidt-Chanasit completed his habilitation in virology at the Institute for Medical Virology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main.
