Despite the start of the corona vaccination campaigns in numerous countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not expect that this year, in individual countries, extensive protection against the virus will be achieved through so-called herd immunity. “We will not reach any levels of population or herd immunity in 2021,” said WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan in a virtual press briefing on Monday.

WHO expert: Progress through vaccination, but it still takes

Swaminathan praised the “incredible progress” that had been made with the rapid development of several safe and reliable vaccines against the novel coronavirus. But the production and delivery of the billions of vaccine doses used worldwide takes time. Therefore, people must continue to be patient.

Herd immunity is when so many people in a population are immunized against a pathogen that it can only spread a little and thus the non-vaccinated people are largely protected from it.
