Berlin (dpa / bb) – The initiative “Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen & Co.” applied for the implementation of the second stage of its referendum on Monday. As she announced on the same day, the documents have been delivered to the Senate Department for Home Affairs. Signature sheets and lists would have to be drawn up within a month.
The aim is to “socialize” real estate companies in Berlin with more than 3,000 apartments in return for compensation. To get a vote on it, the initiative needs to collect a little more than 170,000 signatures. This corresponds to the prescribed share of seven percent of the population eligible to vote in the House of Representatives.
The initiative expects to start collecting signatures, which is limited to four months, on February 26th. If the necessary number of signatures comes together, the initiative plans a referendum parallel to the Bundestag and House of Representatives elections at the end of September. Last year, in an initial phase, it collected around 77,000 signatures for the start of the referendum.
The House of Representatives could then have adopted the goals of the initiative and introduced a corresponding bill. However, red-red-green does not agree on the topic.
The Berlin Left wants to continue to support the initiative. Mark Schrolle from “Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen & Co.” said that the conditions for the referendum had not been eased despite the corona pandemic. “That shows that it is still difficult for direct democracy in Berlin.”
The initiative is still well prepared for the collection of signatures.
