22. Matchday review: RB Leipzig is the AstraZeneca vaccine of the Bundesliga

Updated February 22, 2021 at 11:42 am

The  fight for the German championship will finally be exciting again – even if RB Leipzig probably has the same problem as the AstraZeneca vaccine. Here follows our review of the 22nd matchday, which is not always to be taken seriously.

  • Arminia Bielefeld – VfL Wolfsburg 0:3
  • Eintracht Frankfurt – FC Bayern 2:1
  • 1. FC Cologne – VfB Stuttgart 0:1
  • Borussia Mönchengladbach – FSV Mainz 05 1:2
  • SC Freiburg – Union Berlin 0:1
  • Schalke 04 – Borussia Dortmund 0:4
  • FC Augsburg – Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1:1
  • Hertha BSC – RB Leipzig 0:3
  • TSG 1899 Hoffenheim – Werder Bremen 4:0

You should have heard about it

  • © www.de24.news The  whole previous week the streaming provider DAZN had the thankless task of selling the game between Arminia Bielefeld and VfL Wolfsburg as a “Friday cracker” and thus attracting potential subscribers. I don’t know if the game lived up to expectations, but at least three goals were scored. So maybe it would have been worth switching on after all. Alone to see how it can be that Wolfsburg is suddenly in third place in the table.
  • FC Augsburg almost made it. © www.de24.news

The  Swabians have never been so close to a win against Leverkusen. And Bayer goalkeeper Lomb would apparently really have indulged the Augsburgers, otherwise he would certainly not have shot such a huge buck. That it was only enough to draw in the end, Lomb couldn’t help it.

  • As expected, FC Schalke 04 have moved into a long-term residence in Jammertal after the Revier derby against Borussia Dortmund. Not even the greatest optimist should believe in relegation. Instead, the greatest optimist is excited about the possibility of a really fun second division season.
  • True to the motto “© www.de24.news

The  squirrel eats hard”, FSV Mainz 05 has succeeded in rising from what was said to be dead to being Lazarus. After defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach, one point separates the Mainz team from the saving bank. Maybe Mainz will sing and laugh again, at least at Easter.

It will be exciting again – your local vaccination center will take complaints

It’s hard to find news these days that inspire confidence. A virus mutation lurks around every corner or someone responsible for Bavaria who talks nonsense.

That is why we do not want to withhold the best news of the weekend from you – besides the fact that people who have been vaccinated with Biontech are very likely no longer able to pass the coronavirus on – of course: © www.de24.news

The  German championship has not yet been decided. FC Bayern are not yet champions, there is something like tension in the Bundesliga. Is not that great?

Only two points separate FC Bayern and RB Leipzig in the table. That’s practically nothing, especially if Bayern continue as they did against Eintracht Frankfurt and Arminia Bielefeld.

Yes, yes, I know what you will say now: You could have done without RB Leipzig as Bayern pursuer. No tradition, no cult club and you don’t like Red Bull either – you’d prefer Bayern.

But honestly, it’s like with the vaccine from AstraZeneca: If I have the choice between not being vaccinated and a possible severe course – or being vaccinated with AstraZeneca and with a high probability of not getting COVID-19 or at least only to experience a mild course, then I jump into the syringe with a running start.

So: if I have the choice between a Bavarian championship on matchday 27 or a proper championship fight between two equal teams, then Leipzig as a pursuer is right for me personally.

Because the corona pandemic taught us one thing: in times of need, you can also look forward to things that would not have occurred to you before. Syringes, for example.

Matchday quote

“If I could choose, I’d let them in.”

The  Dortmund-born BVB captain Marco Reus after the 4-0 win in the Revier derby against FC Schalke, who was threatened with relegation. Nice of him.)

Match day number

2 – Bayern have lost so many games since the beginning of the year. That is twice as many as in the entire previous year. Dramatic.
