With the Instinct MI200, AMD will probably offer a successor to its professional graphics card this year.
With the Instinct MI200, AMD brought a professional graphics card onto the market at the end of 2020. For the current year, the manufacturer wants the
According to Leaker “Komachi”
already publish the successor. The Instinct MI 200 will continue to support AMD’s CDNA GPU architecture for compute-intensive workloads. In addition, AMD could pursue a “multi-chip module” approach. This means that modular graphics processors are used. AMD is already pursuing a similar approach with the chiplet design of the current Ryzen processors. In contrast to a monolithic design, the multi-chip modules increase the production yield. This is also possible with graphics cards, but should be reserved for professional cards for the time being.
The date for the market launch of the Instinct MI200 will be the end of 2021, when the professional graphics cards could go on sale together with the new Epyc processors of the Trento generation. On the other hand, one can only speculate about the performance of the card.
The chip clocked at 1.5 GHz has a computing power of 184.6 Tflops with half precision. For calculations, the GPU can fall back on 32 GB of HBM2 memory, which clocks at 1.2 GHz and is connected via a 4,096-bit memory interface. This results in a memory transfer performance of up to 1,228.8 GB per second. Such high performance has its price, of course: An Instinct MI100 card costs 6,400 US dollars.
The successor should be found in similar price regions.
