In the corona pandemic, employees often suffer heavy income losses, and many businesses fear for their existence. But one thing remains constant: the rent. Will the government’s “housing offensive” help?

Berlin (dpa) – Tenant representatives and trade unions are calling for a nationwide rent freeze for the next six years.  The  previous measures by the federal government have not turned the housing market around, announced the German Tenants’ Association, the German Trade Union Confederation, the Paritätische Gesamtverband and several tenant initiatives on Friday. Furthermore, too few apartments are being built, rents are rising, as are building land prices in metropolitan areas, while the number of social housing continues to fall.

“Due to the corona, many employees have a loss of income and thus difficulties in making a living,” said DGB board member Stefan Körzell. “©

The y especially need a rent freeze.”

The  owners’ association Haus und Grund rejected the claim. “©

The  idea that all tenants are in need is completely unrealistic,” said association president Kai Warnecke. This also applies to a rent freeze. Haus und Grund referred to Berlin, where there has been such a rent cap for a year. This reduces the supply of apartments and primarily relieves wealthy tenants in the upscale segment.

The  federal government wants to take stock of its “housing offensive” on Tuesday. It had started two years ago. However, according to the tenants’ association, the rent spiral continues to turn upwards. “More and more people are afraid of losing their home,” it said. In addition to the rent freeze, changes in land law, more new construction, stricter rules for lease terminations and more modernization funding are required.
