After the Morgestraich at 4 a.m., a state of emergency usually applies in Basel for 72 hours. Not so this year. The “drey Scheenschte Dääg” fell victim to the pandemic for the second time. After 2020, Carnival 2021 will also be different from normal. Corona spoils the fun. But not all carnival people can be brought down.
This year, carnival enthusiasts are also jokingly talking about the «Basel Carnival 2.0». But little is as it always was. The local TV station “Telebasel” shows the full length of Morgestraich 2019 as a consolation. And again, at exactly 4 a.m. like the year before: no bang. Also no lights off.
After a few minutes the spook is over
Last year around 1000 steadfast people celebrated the Morgestraich, although the carnival was forbidden. This year, gatherings of more than five people are prohibited. Again, a couple of Basel Carnival people didn’t want to let the fun be completely taken away. Around 300 people gathered on Basel’s market square.
To the brief cheers of the bystanders, a fully occupied carnival tram passes by. Only a few masked people can be seen in the crowd. The longed-for carnival music can be heard from somewhere. From speakers. After about ten minutes, the ghost is over. People are leaving, the streets are deserted again.
Virtual Morgestraich
Many were sitting in front of the screen at home at 4 o’clock sharp, with a hot flour soup in front of them, nicely isolated from the virus and the otherwise hustle and bustle. A Corona-compliant replacement program should put off. The Morgestraich took place mainly virtually.
In the “Diggiboscht” of the Basel Carnival Committee, the top Basel Carnival activist Pia Inderbitzin called for a quiet Morgestraich in your own four walls:
“Lean back, gnaw on a moth or a nightingale while they lick, put a butterfly or a larva in a trap and put it to the wegger, who strikes on Monday the 22nd Hornig Vieri!”
Everything normal again on March 7th, 2022?
At least the date has already been set for the next Morgestraich, which is supposed to make up for two years of missed happiness: March 7, 2022! (kes)
