32 models competed in the annual ÖAMTC test.
The ÖAMTC and its partner clubs have a total of 2021 32 summer tire models in two dimensions (205/55 R16 91V and 225/50 R17 98Y) have been tested with regard to their driving and safety properties as well as under comfort, environmental and economic aspects. “This year it has been shown again that the ‘highly recommended’ category does not only include models from the top price category,” summarizes ÖAMTC tire expert Friedrich Eppel.
From 15 tested models of dimension 205/55 R16 91V, which is common in vehicles of the Compact and lower middle class is installed, three models received a “very recommendable” overall rating, eleven tires were rated “recommended”, and one tire was rated “conditionally recommended”. All around “highly recommended” showed the Continental Premium Contact 6, of the Semperit Speed-Life 3 and the Bridgestone Turanza T005.
Large differences were observed in this dimension wear established an important criterion especially for frequent drivers: the Nokian Wetproof For example, it can run almost 25,000 kilometers to the wear limit. Of the Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance 2 on the other hand, under the same conditions, it achieves more than twice the mileage with approx.
The fact that the latter was only “recommendable” was due to slight weaknesses on the dry road.
From 17 tested models of size 225/50 R17 98Y (often found at Mid-range vehicles) the total output of Falken Azenis FK510, Continental Premium Contact 6, Kumho Ecsta PS71 and Bridgestone Turanza T005 With “highly recommended” rated. Another twelve tires were used as “Recommended” judged, led by Michelin Primacy 4, which achieved top marks in the categories “dry” and “wear and tear”, but showed slight weaknesses when wet.
The spread in the “Wet” category is easy to see from the difference in braking distances from 80 km / h. In a direct comparison, the vehicle with the weakest tire comes in the wet (Firestone Roadhawk with 41.2 meters) almost two vehicle lengths later to stop than the one with the best wet brake (Semperit Speed-Life 3 with 32.7 meters). This poor behavior in wet conditions also ensured that “not recommended” at the Firestone Roadhawk, the only negative rating in this year’s summer tire test.
