Franziska Preuss lets the Germans cheer – Lesser collapses completely
FAfter her phenomenal final sprint, ranziska Preuss threw her arms up, then her teammates welcomed her at the finish with cheers. Thanks to an outstanding performance, last runner Preuss secured the longed-for first medal for the German biathletes at the World Championships in Pokljuka on Saturday with silver.
With her final show of strength on the home straight, Preuss caught the Ukrainian Olena Pidruschna by 0.4 seconds – and was then able to celebrate the all-important liberation with Vanessa Hinz, Janina Hettich and Denise Herrmann. “I noticed, that’s enough. It was really a really nice feeling. That is extremely good for everyone, the whole team, ”said Preuss. It prevented the first medalless World Cup for German women since 1987. As in the previous year, gold went to Norway. Previously, only Arnd Peiffer had won a medal for the German team with a single silver.
“This week you saw again that competitive sport is really tough. Now it’s mega cool that we caught the day today and have something to celebrate, ”said Preuss, who laid the foundation for the sense of achievement with two quick and error-free shootings, on ZDF. In the previous individual races, Preuss and Co. had narrowly missed a medal.
The y were close, but never good enough – until now.
“Hadn’t believed in it myself anymore”
In the meantime, it looked like the next World Cup disappointment. After a strong start by Hinz, 28, who was the only one of the current team to take part in the last World Cup victory in 2017 in Hochfilzen, the deficit of the not so strong Hettich to the top grew to one minute. “I’m glad that I have such a cool team around me, the others were really amazing,” said Hettich, who handed over to Herrmann in sixth place.
Herrmann, 32, started the race to catch up. She barely avoided the penalty loop with three spare rounds, but then shot zero standing up. With a 43-second mortgage, she sent Preuss to the final in fifth. “We know a lot can happen in a relay race. We really had to fight to the end, that paid off, ”said Hinz, who watched intently as Preuss went on the hunt for the top.
And the girlfriend of Simon Schempp, who resigned shortly before the World Cup, showed why she is the most consistent German this winter. After the last shooting, she went into the final lap second. But when Pidruschna passed her, it looked like bronze at first. But the Bavarian struck back. “It was awesome,” said discipline trainer Florian Steirer, and Preuss admitted: “I didn’t believe it myself anymore. But then somehow my second life came. “
What’s wrong with Erik Lesser?
The old hand was able to prevent the penalty loop in the standing position, but what had already been indicated on the second lap became clear: Lesser lacked any strength in his body. Again and again he showed his teeth, tried to bite, but one athlete after another ran past him effortlessly. For Lesser, every step seemed pure agony.
In the end he was 1:23 minutes behind the lead, handed over to Roman Rees in 20th and fell exhausted into the snow. Half an hour later, the team doctor gave the all-clear. “He’s doing well at the moment, we haven’t found anything to worry about, so far we have no explanation,” said Dr. Jan Wüstenfeld. Lesser reported that he was completely powerless.
The gap grew to 1: 44.6 minutes, Peiffer started the race in 15th place, but continued to work his way forward. Finally, Benedikt Doll brought the Germans home in seventh place.
