Borussia Dortmund: Hans Joachim Watzke defends cheers after the derby victory

Dortmund’s managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke has defended the cheers of the BVB players after the derby win against FC Schalke 04. »Imagine the team going home after the triumph, the fans standing outside cheering and our players sitting like wax figures inside the bus without facial expressions or gestures. It can’t be, ”said the 61-year-old in an interview with Sport1 and added:“ Nevertheless, we all have to obey the rules ”.
In front of the training grounds of the Dortmund Bundesliga club, there was a gathering of larger fan groups on Saturday evening. After the jubilee celebrations, BVB admitted violations of the corona rules.  The  players also celebrated on the bus without masks and filmed it “in exuberance,” as the club announced.

A video that was temporarily published on Mahmoud Dahoud’s account on Instagram showed how Marco Reus, Erling Haaland and Emre Can, among others, cheered fans behind the windshield who welcomed them with Bengalos. © The  players sang BVB songs and chanted “Derby winners”. ©

The  more than ten-minute video showed ecstasy among players and fans, but also the disregard of any corona rules. Only a few supporters wore masks, without any space a large cluster formed in front of the bus. It was deleted again on Sunday night.

“Will draw our lessons”

“But it is important, and I would like to emphasize this again at this point, that no player got off the bus and celebrated with the fans,” said Watzke at Sport1. BVB will accept a penalty from the German Football League (DFL) and learn from the case. “We’ll work through the case and work with the police and everyone involved to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again. As Borussia Dortmund, we have a great responsibility. We sincerely apologize for that «, Watzke is quoted as saying.

At Schalke, following the 4-0 home defeat in the derby against BVB, some fans of FC Schalke tried to gain access to the stadium interior, the police had confirmed on Sunday. ©

The re was a clash with the police. As the »Bild« reported, some supporters had come to the team hotel before kick-off and met sports director Jochen Schneider there.
