Bitter draw for FC Augsburg: Bayer Leverkusen only equalized shortly before the end on Sunday (February 21, 2021) and scored a lucky point in the Bundesliga.
Florian Niederlechner met the Augsburg leadership in the fifth minute of the game. Edmond Tapsoba scored the equalizer for Leverkusen in stoppage time (90 + 4 minutes) to make it 1-1. With the loss of points on the 22nd matchday, Leverkusen had to accept another setback in the fight for the Champions League places.
“It’s just extremely bitter, we don’t need to talk about it,” said Niederlechner’s goal scorer after the game on the ARD microphone. “But I’m in good spirits: if we continue to play like we do today, we’ll reward ourselves very quickly.”
Leverkusen’s Sven Bender was critical of his team’s performance: “You can be happy with the point at the end. We didn’t have a single real chance to score in 94 minutes. We currently have no consistency in our game, there is a lack of ease and self-image.”
Hair-raising mistake by Bayer goalkeeper Lomb
The game began with a momentous mistake by the Leverkusen goalkeeper Niklas Lomb: After a back pass, the representative of goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky hit over the ball, so that FCA striker Niederlechner only had to walk the ball and could easily insert an early lead for the home side. “I just thought: It can’t have happened now,” said Lomb, commenting on his gaffe after the game.
Leverkusen reacted to the Augsburg goal with angry counter-attacks and created some promising flank situations, but neither the very active Moussa Diaby nor Leon Bailey found a buyer. The Werkself had a lot of possession at times, but purposeful passes to the top were too rare. Augsburg, on the other hand, skilfully defended the early leadership and concentrated especially the center with all its might.
Leverkusen long too harmless
Leverkusen also dominated the game in the second round. In the 50th minute, Diaby gave Bayer a first good chance to score with a full cocked shot from an acute angle, but Rafal Gikiewicz defused the ball with a flight save. Further successful actions on the Leverkusen side did not follow, however, as the team from coach Peter Bosz appeared frighteningly uninspired.
The home side did not play off the few Augsburg counter situations well, so that dangerous goal area scenes remained in short supply on both sides. The FCA always managed to keep the guests away from their own goal through passionate and consistent defense.
Hit in added time
It was only in stoppage time that Leverkusen’s attacking efforts became more concrete. First Demirbay checked Gikiewicz with a tight shot from distance, then Tapsoba struck: A cross from substitute Jeremie Frimpong shot the advanced central defender dryly to equalize the last minute.
Bayer Leverkusen will continue on Thursday with the return match against Young Boys Bern in the Europa League (02.25.2021, 9:00 p.m.). In the Bundesliga, the Werkself will then receive SC Freiburg on Sunday evening. Augsburg also competes on Sunday – at Mainz 05 (3:30 p.m.).
