Bundesliga: Bayer Leverkusen missed victory at FC Augsburg - goalkeeper kicks past the ball

Bayer Leverkusen left points in the battle for the Champions League ranks in the Bundesliga, but at least managed to avoid defeat. Bayer played 1: 1 (0: 1) at FC Augsburg and in fifth place is five points behind the fourth-placed Frankfurt team, who defeated Bayern on Saturday. In the past 13 competitive games, the club have only two wins.
In Augsburg, the draw came about in a particularly bitter way: A blatant mistake by goalkeeper Niklas Lomb led to the early conceding goal. On the other hand, Bayer only scored thanks to a late equalizer by Edmond Tapsoba (90 + 4).

The  fifth minute had just started when Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey played the ball to his goalkeeper. Lomb accepted the pass with a first contact, with the second he wanted to knock it past Florian Niederlechner, who was now charging towards him – but Lomb stepped into the void. Niederlechner picked up the ball and played it into the goal, he has probably never scored an easier goal in the Bundesliga.

For Lomb, 27, it was only the second Bundesliga appearance of his career. He is actually a substitute behind regular goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký; Bayer is currently missing due to an injury. Lomb was substituted on for Hrádecký last weekend against Mainz, and during the week he played through Bayer’s 3: 4 at Young Boys Bern.

In the last minute of stoppage time, Tapsoba scores

Lomb did not have the opportunity to make up for his mistake from the beginning in Augsburg. Because over long distances, both teams found it difficult to create clear opportunities. Niederlechner (27th) and László Bénes (33rd) as well as Daniel Caligiuri (40th) each shot over the goal with a free kick for the hosts. Bayer even managed a shot on Augsburg goal after 48 minutes, Moussa Diaby failed with him on Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz. Leverkusen’s best opportunity was missed by Jeremie Frimpong when he shot over the goal from a half-right position (75th).

It took until the last minute of stoppage time before Bayer scored the goal that meant the tie: Demarai Gray passed the ball from the far right flat into the center of the box, where Tapsoba – actually a central defender – was lurking in the center forward position. Tapsoba took the pass directly and hit the near corner.

While Leverkusen has to fear for participation in the Champions League after this 1-1 draw, the FCA has five points ahead of the relegation place.
