Borussia Mönchengladbach – Mainz 05 1:2 (1:1), Tore: 0: 1 Onisiwo (10th), 1: 1 Stindl (26th), 1: 2 Stöger (86th)
As a trainer, you can look back on a similarly lively relationship story as a busy bachelor. Marco Rose and his future ex-club (Gladbach) received an ex-club from the beginnings of coaching (Mainz). Rose, BVB coach from summer, had to check his feelings for his Gladbachers after ten minutes. A long ball from Mainz’s Jerry St. Juste passed Matthias Ginter far too easily. Karim Onisiwo took the lead. Three minutes later, Borussia captain Lars Stindl was ready to take the penalty, but the VAR recognized an offside position for Jonas Hofmann, who had previously been fouled. Stindl had to resign without having achieved anything, but later kicked the ball deliberately into the long corner of the Mainz goal – 1: 1 (26th). After the break, both teams seldom bickered in midfield, but really good chances to score were as rare as a bar flirt in the pandemic. When everything looked like a draw, Mainz’s Kevin Stöger made it 2-1. For Gladbach, the defeat is a bitter setback in the race for the Champions League, the victory for Mainz a considerable encouragement in the relegation battle.
Eintracht Frankfurt – FC Bayern 2: 1 (2: 0), Tore: 1: 0 Kamada (12.), 2: 0 Younes (31.), 2: 1 Lewandowski (53.)
It is not necessarily a new pattern for Bayern to start off weakly this season and come back with a race to catch up. That was the last time it was 3: 3 against Arminia Bielefeld, and it was also this time in Frankfurt. However, there was one crucial difference that made the game special in the course of the season for the record champions: As a guest at fourth in the table, three days before the Champions League first knockout round of 16 at Lazio, the form of Bayern was not enough to win one Turn residue.
In the first half, which was impressively weak from Munich’s point of view, in the absence of the injured Frankfurt top striker André Silva, it was mainly his colleague Amin Younes that Bayern could not get under control. After 12 minutes, he played a pass between Leroy Sané and Niklas Süle on the left wing, and the subsequent cross from Filip Kostic was used by Daichi Kamada, who was free in the middle, to take the lead. In the 31st minute, Younes got the ball back from Kamada, who was undisturbed on the baseline, played Süle with a hook and chased the ball into the corner, it was a perfect goal.
Younes kept making his opponents look like they were slipping after them on black ice. And at 2-0, the former national player, 27, showed not only his footballing class, but also his empathy. In memory of the racist murders in Hanau a year ago, Eintracht had warmed up in shirts with the names of the nine victims. Younes ran to the exchange bank, took a shirt with the portrait photo of the attack victim Fatih Saraçoğlu – and held it up.
In the second half, Leon Goretzka came to replace Marc Roca with the weakened replacement, including without Thomas Müller, who had tested positive for Corona, and Bayern became stronger. Before Robert Lewandowski’s subsequent goal, it was Leroy Sané’s hook this time that the Frankfurt defense could not control. Bayern had numerous chances to equalize in order to avert the third defeat of the season. But the decisive signs were already set by unity.
1. FC Cologne – VfB Stuttgart 0:1 (0:0), Tor: 0:1 Kalajdzic (49.)
In 2000, not everything went well by any means, but at least the feared end of the world did not materialize and 1. FC Köln defeated VfB Stuttgart 3-2 at home. But since the days of Matthias Scherz and Dirk Lottner, Cologne have been waiting for a home win against the Swabians. This time both teams did a lot to ensure that the league abolished this duel in the future. The Cologne team recorded a shot on goal in the statistics, and that was it in the first half.
The second round paid pain and suffering: With the first chance, Sasa Kalajdzic skilfully knocked the 1-0 with the back of his head. Shortly afterwards, Silas Wamangituka had no leisure and failed because of Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn. Salih Özcan still hit the Stuttgart crossbar, but Cologne coach Markus Gisdol found neither a lottery nor a joke on his bench to turn the game around. Cologne will have to wait for next season to break the streak if both clubs play in the same league. VfB is now tenth, Cologne in 14th place.
Freiburg – Union Berlin 0: 1 (o: 0), Tore: 0:1 Prömel (64.)
The bright spot sat on the bench in the person of Max Kruse. After an eleven-week break, the strong attacker was there again – but his substitution initially played no role, rather the three-time change of SC coach Christian Streich. Only a few seconds after the Freiburg exchange, Unions crossed Marcus Ingvartsen to Grischa Prömel, who headed 1-0. Union ended a series of five winless games with the goal and passed Freiburg in the table.
