Club sports are canceled for up to 7.3 million children
Because of the corona lockdown, club sports are canceled for up to 7.3 million children and young people in Germany. A good half of all girls and boys between the ages of 0 and 18 were members of a sports club at the beginning of 2020, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday in Wiesbaden. The share is greatest among the seven to under 15-year-olds: In this age group, 70.5 percent of the total of around 5.9 million children and adolescents are registered in a sports club, with significantly more boys (79.4 percent) than girls (61.1 percent).
Club sport was more restricted than many other areas of life in the first year of the corona pandemic. Most of the sports halls and fields have been closed again since November of last year, and there are currently no prospects of concrete easing.
At the other end of the age pyramid, the sport lockdown mainly affects senior citizens, who often do sport in the sense of active health prevention, as the statisticians further explained. Of the 22.5 million people in Germany who are older than 60, 20.8 percent or 4.7 million belonged to a sports club. At the beginning of 2020, a total of around 24.2 million women and men were active or passive members in the around 90,000 clubs registered with the German Olympic Sports Confederation. That corresponds to 29.1 percent of the population.
Team and indoor sports as well as fitness and course offers in the gym area are particularly affected by the lockdown. According to the information, around 2.1 million or 29.5 percent of the children and young people in sports clubs between the ages of 0 and 18 played football. A similar number of children and young people in this age group (1.9 million or 26.4 percent) were registered in gymnastics clubs. Gymnastics was the most popular sport among club members over 60: around a quarter of them – around 1.2 million people – belonged to a gymnastics club. (epd)
