Cryptomining Brake and CMP Product Line to Increase RTX Availability for Gamers; Rumors of Ampere re-issue

Graphics cards from the RTX 3000 series from Nvidia are still difficult to come by and this state will continue for a long time – it is no different with GPUs from AMD and other tech products.  The re are many reasons for the scarcity of graphics cards: rip-offs / scalpers (we reported), delivery and production bottlenecks, restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic and of course also “miners”, i.e. those who use graphics cards to mine cryptocurrencies “. Images from dozens of RTX graphics cards or notebooks with RTX GPUs, which are not used for gaming but for mining in a network, are haunted the Internet and usually cause very angry reactions from gamers (example).
Nvidia has now announced the first measures to initially limit the mining of cryptocurrencies to a graphics card. Together with the start of sales of the RTX-3060 graphics cards (release: February 25th), a graphics card driver will be released that will limit the cryptocurrency performance – around half using the example of Ethereum. Whether this restriction will be enough to deter miners remains to be seen. ©

The  limitation is based on the software (driver) and not the hardware, but according to Nvidia it should not be possible to override the hash rate limiter because there is a “safe handshake” [Datenaustausch] between the driver, the RTX-3060 silicon and the BIOS (firmware) “. ©

The  corresponding game-ready driver will not limit the performance of the other available RTX-3000 graphics cards.

The  official announcement from Nvidia states: “We are gamers through and through. We are obsessed with new gaming features, new architectures, new games and technologies. We have developed GeForce GPUs for gamers – and gamers ask for more. But Nvidia GPUs are programmable. And they Users are constantly discovering new applications for them, from weather simulation and gene sequencing to deep learning and robotics. ©

The  mining of cryptocurrencies is one of them. To meet the special requirements of Ethereum mining, we are canceling the Nvidia CMP product line (Cryptocurrency Mining Processor) for professional mining. “

Another measure against the use of RTX graphics cards as crypto mining hardware is the introduction of the CMP product range. ©

The  CMP boards have no graphics function and have been optimized for mining performance and efficiency (no display outputs; lower core voltage and frequency; can be placed closer together). According to Nvidia, CMPs do not meet the specifications for a GeForce GPU and have no influence on the availability of GeForce GPUs for gamers. Rather, the availability of the RTX graphics cards should be increased by the CMP products.

At, another measure is brought into play based on information from a speaker. According to this, Nvidia could phase out the previous Ampere portfolio (RTX-3000 series) and replace it with new versions of the previous graphics cards with cryptomining brakes (based on hardware) – slight adjustments to the hardware may be possible, but the central element of this supposed ampere re-edition is the cryptomining limitation.

At it continues: “This means that nVidia could still spread its cryptomining brake across the entire ampere portfolio – which would have a much greater effect than if only the GeForce RTX 3060 was taken out of the equation. Even if the cryptominer finally found a way, this one To circumvent the mining brake, nVidia will initially sell more or less purely to gamers over a certain period of time – and thus be able to finally supply many waiting graphics card buyers, thus also relieving a lot of pressure on the market. This even helps in the long term and even if the miners the mining brake should one day crack: Because once the greatest pressure on demand has been relieved, the ratio of supply to demand is not as lopsided as it is now, which can then bring the graphics card street prices back to a reasonably acceptable level. “
