Fabio Gstrein narrowly failed in the quarter-finals at the new parallel world champion
Fabio Gstrein was the only one of four ÖSV athletes to survive the qualification and even with the best time on the blue course. In the decision, which started with the round of 16, the Tyrolean had to deal with the Swede Matthias Roenngren, who qualified eighth on the red course for the final. Gstrein prevailed confidently and qualified for the quarter-finals.
In the round of the top eight, the 23-year-old met Frenchman Mathieu Faivre and had to admit defeat after two runs. In the end, the Ötztal man was just two hundredths of a second behind the eventual world champion and thus finished fifth. Filip Zubcic (CRO) secured silver and Loic Meillard (SUI) bronze behind gold medalist Faire.
Fabio Gstrein: “After the first run in the quarter-finals, I was already five tenths behind and was still able to catch up 48 hundredths. Unfortunately, I made a small mistake in the long turn and that was probably the two hundredths. You have to be fast in both runs, that’s the only way to get ahead. ”
Combination world champion Marco Schwarz, like his teammates Roland Leitinger and Adrian Pertl, failed in the qualification that took place in the morning. Leitinger was 3 hundredths of a second missing in ninth place on the blue course and black was tenth on the red course. The Carinthian was missing 18 hundredths to get up and his compatriot Adrian Pertl was eliminated.
