Max Kruse was on the shopping list of the German record champions and the reigning English title holder. This is what the star striker of 1. FC Union Berlin announced in a podcast.
Union Berlin’s Max Kruse was, according to his own statement, at least one and a half years ago with record champions FC Bayern Munich on an extended list of candidates. Today’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic called him “or he sent me a message, I’m not quite sure now,” says Kruse in the podcast “Gameday winner winner” of the football manager app “Kickbase”.
Salihamidzic told him that he would be in touch during the week. “Of course he didn’t,” said Kruse, who has been playing for the Köpenicker since this season, and added jokingly: “I’m still sitting in front of my cell phone.” In the case of large clubs, the ex-national player said that several people were put on hold. In the summer of 2019, Kruse’s contract with Werder Bremen had expired, the striker then moved to Turkey to Fenerbahce Istanbul.
Liverpool FC’s interest was more specific
Much more concrete was the interest of Liverpool FC with coach Jürgen Klopp at that time, reported Kruse. “I’ve been in contact since February, March. (…) Talking to Jürgen Klopp was a great thing. Of course I would have.” Liverpool ultimately changed their minds in terms of personnel planning. “That was disappointing, but that’s the way it is in football,” said Kruse.
This Saturday (3:30 p.m. / in the live ticker at t-online) the striker, who had been injured for a long time, is back in the Berlin squad for the away game at SC Freiburg. Kruse had torn a muscle bundle in his thigh at the beginning of December and has had to pause since then. Previously, the 32-year-old showed outstanding performances in the jersey of the iron with eleven direct goals (six goals, five assists) in ten Bundesliga appearances.
