The innovative Applied Date Science bachelor’s degree program will start at the University of Vienna in autumn 2021 – applications are already possible now
Vienna (OTS) – The lack of qualified specialists in the field of data science is currently a major challenge for the economy. In order to meet this demand, the Module University Vienna will be offering a curriculum tailored to the job market from autumn 2021.
The course approved by AQ Austria will start next autumn.
The combination of data science and practical application makes the English-language bachelor’s degree unique. An interdisciplinary orientation with a combination of quantitative methods and business knowledge enables excellent career opportunities.
Economists today have to act faster and faster in order to react to short-term changes in external factors. Globalization is also intensifying competition in numerous industries and making fact-based decisions increasingly important. Economic and social developments can only be predicted and targeted decisions made with a good database. However, it is often not the lack of data that makes decision-making difficult. The increasing digitization in all areas of life enables the collection of numerous data, the abundance of which in turn can hardly be meaningfully interpreted without the right analysis methods, explains the dean PD Dr. Marion Garaus: “Research at the University Vienna module has been concerned with the development and application of innovative analysis methods and the development of information and decision support systems for several years. In the new bachelor’s degree, we have therefore set ourselves the goal of showing young people how these new methods of analyzing different data material can be meaningfully used for entrepreneurial decision-making, and in very different contexts. ”
Interface between management, business administration and data processing
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Data Science curriculum aims to create a learning experience for these specialized skills. This manifests itself in a wide variety of teaching methods that reflect applied learning practices, such as real-world projects, case studies and working with professionals from different business and organizational areas.
The 3-year course is based on five modules: (1) Basics of statistics and differential and integral calculus (2) Basics of data science and engineering (3) Basics of management (4) Data science for business applications and (5) the bachelor’s thesis. Future students are offered a unique course of study that combines the specialist knowledge of various faculties that are renowned at the University Vienna module, such as management, tourism and data analysis, ”says the dean. Specifically, this means that both courses in data science and business administration are part of the developed curriculum. “
The data science courses have an explicit management reference to illustrate how the knowledge gained can be implemented in business decisions.”
New demands on the job market
The rapid development of new technologies for data processing and analysis often makes it impossible to train one’s own employees because of the lack of time and resources.
The refore, companies are looking for graduates who offer specialized knowledge of data science.
The new course meets these requirements: “In the future, specialists will be needed in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, web programming, and database management and design.
The BSc in Applied Data Science enables graduates to work as data scientists, data engineers, consultants, data analysts, data warehouse architects or business intelligence analysts, with practical application in the foreground this course stands. ”
