Health – Corona numbers in Germany are rising again – Health

Berlin (dpa) – In Germany there are signs that the corona pandemic is getting worse.  The  Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 9,164 new infections within one day on Saturday. That was 810 more than on Saturday the previous week. In addition, the so-called R value rose – another important figure.

Against the background of the upcoming school and daycare openings in several federal states on Monday, there are now increasing signs that the corona vaccination staff could take their turn earlier and the vaccination regulation will be changed accordingly.

© The  RKI gave the nationwide seven-day R-value on Saturday afternoon as 1.07. That is the highest value in several weeks. This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 107 more people. This could indicate that the more contagious virus variants are spreading faster despite the lockdown.

RKI President Lothar Wieler called on people to persevere: “False promises do not help anyone, and it is quite simply that we have to follow these measures that we know, that we have to hold out for a certain time,” he said at an im Internet broadcast discussion of the Federal Ministry of Health on the subject of vaccination.

Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) spoke of a “really difficult phase” of the corona pandemic. All are tired after twelve months. “A child who is ten years old has now spent a tenth of his life in the pandemic.” ©

The re is an expectation that with the number of new infections falling, the restrictions will go a little further. Spahn also mentioned the mutations. But the vaccination gives confidence, he added.

It is becoming more and more likely that daycare and primary school employees will move up in the order. It is socially very important that daycare centers and primary schools can reopen, said Spahn. On Monday, face-to-face classes will begin again in many institutions in ten federal states and the day-care centers are accepting more children. But because distance is not possible there, they want to move the employees quickly into the next higher group two and make a vaccination offer possible earlier, said Spahn.

In the vaccination sequence in Germany, three large groups were defined: group one with “highest priority”, group two: “high priority”, and group three: “increased priority”. According to the current vaccination ordinance, daycare and primary school employees are in group three and would probably not be there until the summer. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the heads of government of the federal states asked the Ministry of Health at their latest meeting to check whether teachers could get their turn earlier. For this, the current vaccination ordinance would have to be changed.

Representatives of several federal states have meanwhile spoken out in favor. Baden-Württemberg Health Minister Manne Lucha (Greens) announced on Saturday that a corresponding change to the federal vaccination regulation was in progress. A fundamental decision should in all probability also be made in the health ministers’ conference on Monday. Spahn had already said on Friday that a “relatively large consensus” was emerging on this issue. A large majority of Germans also spoke out in favor of it in a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov Germany.

Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) defended the planned school and daycare openings. “You can’t leave the children at home much longer because otherwise child protection and child welfare are at risk,” she told the German Press Agency in Berlin, referring to problems such as loneliness, lack of exercise and resulting “educational and bonding gaps”. In addition, many parents are at the end. “©

The  load limit has been reached.”

Giffey emphasized that openings must be made “responsibly”, with compliance with hygiene rules and protective measures for staff. “It goes without saying that we have to keep an eye on the infection process. It is now about opening steps with certainty.”

Education unions and teacher representatives demanded special consideration for health protection with a view to the openings. ©

The  President of the German Teachers’ Association, Heinz-Peter Meidinger, said it was correct to gradually start teaching again in schools, but only in regions with low infection rates. If federal states open up across the board, even in counties with high contagion rates, this is not responsible with a view to health protection, he told the dpa.

The  education and science union (GEW) was skeptical: “©

The  countries that are now opening their schools are taking a high risk – for the health of teachers, students and their parents,” said chairwoman Marlis Tepe to the newspapers Funke media group (Saturday).
