Hurtigruten Expeditions with new Germany departures in 2022/2023

All year round from Hamburg: Norway winter and summer expedition

The  routes, which are specially tailored to the seasons, allow guests to immerse themselves in the life and nature on Norway’s coast.

For many, the highlight of a winter expedition is the appearance of the spectacular northern lights. That is why MS Otto Sverdrup spends as much time as possible on these trips north of the Arctic Circle in the most active northern light belt, where the chances of seeing the northern lights are highest. ©

The  winter strongholds of Tromsø and Alta are also located here, and are ideal for trips with dogsled or snowmobiles. All information about the Norway expeditions in winter is available at

In the Norwegian summer, the midnight sun merges day and night. North of the Arctic Circle, the sun will then be above the horizon for 24 hours. An ideal setting for excursions on the island of Senja, which was voted one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world by CNN, or for a trip to the Hjørundfjord, one of the most beautiful and longest fjords in Norway. Scientists, outdoor specialists and expedition professionals

The  Hurtigruten expedition teams are always on board. ©

The  experienced experts give daily lectures on the regions visited, lead activities in the on-board Science Center and on deck, and accompany landings and hikes. In addition, they enable guests to participate in “Citizen Science” projects, such as the identification of whales for the “HappyWhale” project or the observation of clouds and sky conditions for the “Globe Observer” program. ©

The  expedition teams consist of experts from a wide range of fields – such as marine biology, sustainability, history, oceanography and photography.

Biofuel for fewer emissions

MS Otto Sverdrup is operated with a combination of biodiesel and normal diesel. This reduces the emission of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. ©

The  certified biofuel is made from waste and does not contain palm oil, so its production has no negative impact on the rainforests. ©

The  ship’s low-emission engines, which were upgraded during the modernization in early 2020, meet all currently known and planned regulations. ©

The  conversion to hybrid drive is planned for the next stay in the shipyard.

About Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten can look back on more than 127 years of Norwegian pioneering history. Today the Hurtigruten Group has two main business areas: Hurtigruten Norway operates on the mail ship route on the Norwegian coast and offers travelers “the most beautiful sea voyage in the world”. Hurtigruten Expeditions brings modern adventure travelers to the most spectacular destinations in the world – from the Arctic north to the Antarctic in the south.

Being the world leader in expedition voyages comes with a great deal of responsibility. Hurtigruten’s investments in green technologies and innovations set a new standard for the entire industry – for example with the world’s first two hybrid expedition ships, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen.
