Italy’s sailors have moved into a match for the America’s Cup for the third time since 1992 and 2000. © The  Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team prevailed 7-1 against Sir Ben Ainslies Ineos Team UK in the challenger final before Auckland.

This gave the Italians the right to challenge Cup defenders New Zealand in the 36th duel for the America’s Cup from March 6th. Two victories on Sunday were enough for Italy to triumph over the British, whose boat Britannia failed due to its weakness in light winds.

Team boss Max Sirena said with tears of joy: “After 20 years, today is a very nice moment. It wasn’t easy, but we’ll work even harder now. “

For the Italian racing team owner and passionate cup hunter Patrizio Bertelli and his team, it is the sixth attempt and two decades after the first success, the second entry into an America’s Cup duel. In 2000 Bertelli’s “Prada Challenge” lost 5-0 at the 30th America’s Cup New Zealand. Before that, in 1992 Raul Gardini’s “Il Moro di Venezia” made Italy dream of the most important trophy in international sailing for the first time in the 28th America’s Cup. At that time, Italy lost 4-1 to the USA.
