Local transport and Corona in Berlin: The BVG must never get really full again – Berlin

BVG and Corona. So far, there has been talk of carrying rates and possible overcrowding. But the situation is much more serious.  The  number of passengers fell in 2020 to 65 percent of the previous year’s figure. Even if the pandemic is, hopefully, defeated at some point: buses and trains should never be as full as they were before Corona.

 The  trend towards more home offices will continue.

 The  BVG is already noticing this: 30,000 subscription customers have canceled, either because they no longer have work or because they do it at home. You no longer need an expensive subscription.

So far, the transport association has only thrown ideas into the room, for example a ten-trip ticket instead of the fixed monthly ticket.

Now there is another one, a nice gesture, that’s all: In summer, you can take your bike with you for free in the monthly pass.

 The  BVG and the S-Bahn won’t save that.

 The  billions in losses are still borne by the federal government. But at some point the money will run out. At the latest when Corona is over, the dispute breaks out as to whether the number of buses, trains and routes can be reduced. Because: there are far fewer people on board. Interestingly, despite this, Berlin is planning new underground routes. It will be exciting.
