ST. WOLFGANG. Ski world champion Rudi Nierlich would have celebrated his 55th birthday on February 20th. The family and local officials met to commemorate his grave. A commemoration ceremony is also planned for May.
In memory of a great son of the Wolfgangsee community, the family of the unfortunate ski star and mayor Franz Eisl met to visit the grave.
“This year is a special year in memory of our Rudi. Not only that my son would have celebrated his 55th birthday today – it’s also 30 years since he became world champion for the third time at the home World Cup in Saalbach, ”says Papa Günter Nierlich.
The Nierlich family is particularly saddened by the fact that, shortly after his great successes, the extraordinary career of their son and brother ended in such a tragic way. In a traffic accident thirty years ago on May 18, 1991, the St. Wolfgang ski star had a fatal accident in his home town.
The market town of St. Wolfgang wants to uphold the memory of one of the greats from among them. “Rudi brought a lot of joy to St. Wolfgang with his successes, we celebrated with him and are proud of his achievements,” says Mayor Franz Eisl.
Memorial ceremony for ski world champions in May
In dear memories, a memorial ceremony will be held in the home community of the ski world champion in May 2021. “We are planning a worthy commemoration together with his family, his long-term trainers and colleagues and of course his friends”, the St. Wolfgang mayor informed.
