Microsoft will release two new Office versions in 2021 without a one-time subscription requirement: Office 2021 and Office LTSC. For Windows and macOS.
Microsoft Office 2021: Again as a one-time purchase without a subscription
Microsoft has officially announced two new versions of Office. The first announcement concerns Office 2021, which is intended for home users and small businesses. The second announcement is called Office LTSC and is aimed at professional users and authorities.
Office 2021 (with Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint) should appear in the course of 2021 for Windows 10 and macOS. End customers will be able to buy Office 2021 in the classic way and do not need to take out an annual subscription to use it. Microsoft gives five years of support for Office 2021. The price for Office 2021 should be compared to the current one
Office LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) will also appear in the second half of 2021 as a one-time purchase without a subscription for Windows and macOS, but is aimed at larger companies and authorities. Microsoft will also provide five years of support for Office LTSC. Office LTSC does not require a cloud connection and can therefore be used by professional users who do not want to move to the cloud.
Microsoft has not yet commented on the new features of Office 2021. Office LTSC should at least offer support for the improved dark mode, bring improved accessibility and features such as dynamic arrays and XLOOKUP in Excel as well as general improvements in Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint. Similar innovations are expected for Office 2021. Apart from the improved dark mode, nothing fundamentally changes in the user interface of Microsoft Office. The Skype for Business client app must be downloaded separately by Office LTSC users from the Microsoft Download Center, while the Microsoft Teams app is supplied directly.
Microsoft plans to publish a preview of Office LTSC in April 2021. On the other hand, there should be no preview of Office 2021. Both new Office versions come with Onenote and are available as both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
Office LTSC must be purchased for each device, but the license does not have to be renewed after purchase. At the start of sales, Microsoft will increase the prices for Office Professional Plus, Office Standard and the associated apps by ten percent. Microsoft is also promising that after Office LTSC there will be another stand-alone version without a subscription.
Microsoft will continue to offer the Microsoft 365 cloud solution as the preferred solution alongside Office 2021 and Office LTSC.
