Vienna (ots) – * Can be ordered from mid-March for Ford Fiesta Mild-Hybrid and Ford Puma Mild-Hybrid
* The double clutch architecture of the new 7-speed automatic increases fuel efficiency, reduces CO2 emissions and ensures harmonious power delivery
Ford has added a new, 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to its range for vehicles with electrified EcoBoost mild hybrid powertrains. As an alternative to the manual 6-speed manual transmission, the new 7-speed automatic is expected to be available on request from mid-March, initially for the Ford Fiesta and Ford Puma series – each in combination with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost Mild Hybrid drive (48 volt technology). This automatic transmission ensures increased driving comfort, especially in the city and in stop-and-go traffic – with reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions at the same time. In addition, the fast, jolt-free gear changes contribute to the harmonious power delivery of the mild hybrid petrol drive.
The sales prices will be announced shortly.
The Ford EcoBoost hybrid drive – the entry into the world of electric mobility
The Ford EcoBoost mild hybrid drive is a 48 volt mild hybrid technology and thus the entry into the world of electric mobility. This means: At lower speeds, the EcoBoost petrol engine in the Ford Fiesta and Ford Puma is supported by an electric motor – more precisely: by a belt-driven integrated starter / generator (BISG) with an output of 11.5 kW (16 hp).
The BISG replaces the conventional alternator and is integrated into the ancillary unit line.
The electric torque support ensures a powerful, immediate response from the turbo gasoline engine, especially when the engine speed is low. At the same time, the mild hybrid system enables a larger charger to be used. This provides more power, but usually also results in a slower response.
The torque support of the starter generator can bridge this “turbo lag”.
The Ford Fiesta and the Ford Puma with EcoBoost mild hybrid technology do not need an external power source, because the air-cooled 48 volt lithium-ion battery (10 Ah), which supplies the electric motor (BISG) with power, is automatically activated by the braking system Roll out and charged when the vehicle brakes (recuperation).
The EcoBoost mild hybrid system continuously monitors how the vehicle is moving and when and how intensively the battery is being charged. From this it calculates when the stored energy can best be invested in propulsion. Depending on the driving scenario, the mild hybrid technology improves fuel efficiency or performance:
The belt-driven starter generator BISG delivers torque (up to 24 Newton meters) during operation, for example when accelerating from a standstill, which the petrol engine does not have to generate. Compared to the equally powerful gasoline engine variants without mild hybrid technology, this improves fuel efficiency and thus also CO2 emissions by up to five percent.
The belt-driven starter generator BISG intervenes as an electric motor as soon as the gasoline engine calls up full power. This increases the maximum torque. In combination with the new 7-speed automatic, the acceleration of the Ford Puma with its 1.0-liter EcoBoost mild hybrid engine and 92 kW (125 PS) is up to four times compared to the non-hybrid version Percent.
The Ford Puma with 1.0 liter EcoBoost mild hybrid drive and 114 kW (155 PS) accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just 8.7 seconds with the new 7-speed automatic.
The new 7-speed automatic can also help to keep the engine in the optimal speed range.
The dual clutch architecture ensures a harmonious power delivery and optimized gear changes: In “Sport” mode, the new 7-speed automatic transmission in the Puma EcoBoost Mild-Hybrid makes better use of the low gears – for sportier dynamics. A quick downshifting of the gears is also made possible for maximum acceleration, for example when overtaking. For the three Puma ST-Line variants (ST-Line, ST-Line X and ST-Line Vignale), manual shifting is also possible using the standard sporty paddles on the steering wheel.
The optional availability of the new 7-speed automatic transmission for vehicles with EcoBoost mild hybrid drive is another step for us on the way to offering all Ford customers attractive access to the ongoing electrification of our vehicle fleet,” says Roelant de Waard, General Manager, Passenger Vehicles, Ford of Europe.
Advanced driver assistance systems
The combination of EcoBoost mild hybrid drive and 7-speed automatic transmission enables advanced driver assistance technologies such as the adaptive cruise control system with stop & go function: the system adapts its own speed to the vehicle in front and brakes to a standstill if necessary and starts off again automatically after a brief stop of less than three seconds.
The engine can also be started remotely using the FordPass app, for example to cool or heat the interior of the vehicle with the air conditioning.
The Ford Fiesta EcoBoost Mild Hybrid and the Ford Puma EcoBoost Mild Hybrid are two of 17 electrified vehicles that Ford will be launching in Europe this year.
