Samsung today presented its new Isocell GN2 camera sensor. One does not indulge in an increased number of megapixels, but instead focuses on other factors.
The sensor has “only” 50 megapixels and should enable faster auto focus thanks to its Dual Pixel Pro technology.
The pixels are 1.4 micrometers in size.
When there is little ambient light, it is possible for the camera sensor to simulate pixels of 2.8 micrometers by means of pixel binning and then take high-quality images with reduced resolution. This is also common with other camera sensors that have around 108 megapixels and then combine several pixels.
The sensor should also allow images with 100 megapixels, which are then extrapolated.

In this context, Samsung is also promoting a new feature called “Staggered HDR”. Several images with different exposures are taken one after the other in order to increase the dynamic range. At the same time, power consumption is reduced by up to 24% compared to real-time HDR. Furthermore, this sensor relies on Smart ISO and Smart ISO Pro. Smart ISO Pro in particular sounds very interesting.
The aim is to compare high and low ISO values with one another in order to create an image with as much dynamism as possible and fewer artifacts.
The Samsung Isocell GN2 has already gone into mass production and also allows shorter 4K videos with up to 120 fps and 1080p clips with up to 480 fps. Smartphones with the new sensor will certainly be presented there soon. You can also find all the technical data of the sensor here.
