Novak Djokovic wins 9th Australian Open title

The  Australian Open remains the unrestricted domain of Novak Djokovic. In his ninth final in Melbourne, the defending champion and world number one won against Daniil Medvedev surprisingly 7: 5, 6: 2, 6: 2.

Djokovic, who spoke of a torn abdominal muscle and a possible abandonment ten days ago after his third round match, was back towards the end of the tournament like in his best days. And in Australia he is almost unbeatable. While Rafael Nadal is the dominator of Paris (13 titles) and Roger Federer is the host at Wimbledon (8), Djokovic is the master of the Rod Laver Arena with nine titles. In terms of victories in all Grand Slam tournaments, the Serb is now back on the heels of the record holders Federer and Nadal (20 each).

Daniil Medvedev, who after the last 20 wins in a row many had thought a chance, could only keep up to some extent at the beginning. © The  25-year-old Russian made up a quick 3-0 deficit and appeared to be doing well after that. At 5: 6 he had a weak service game and Djokovic didn’t need more to gain the upper hand.

Medvedev’s break to 1-0 in the second set was just a flash in the pan. © The  Serb countered again and won nine of the following ten games. As usual, he returned superbly and barely left the 1.98 m tall Russian with free points. Medvedev was forced to take (too) great risks, which led to many mistakes. He has similar strengths to Djokovic, but the original was (once again) too strong.

Rod Laver Arena is half full

© The  many Serbian supporters in the Rod Laver Arena, which was half filled with around 7,500 spectators, were delighted at a real show of force by their favorite, which came to a surprisingly early end after just 1:53 hours. Last year Djokovic had to fight and suffer five sets against Dominic Thiem, and Medvedev also made a far better impression in his first Grand Slam final at the 2019 US Open in five sets against Rafael Nadal.

© The  Russian will improve from 4 to 3 in the world rankings at the expense of Thiem, Djokovic of course remains undisputed number 1. It has long been clear that on March 8th with the 311st week at the top of Roger Federer, he will once be unbeatable will surpass the current record.
