The heavy oil spill in the Mediterranean Sea off Israel has also reached neighboring Lebanon. 
The head of the nature reserve there, Hassan Hamsah, told the German press agency on Monday that black lumps of oil had washed up on the coast around the city of Tire in the south of Lebanon. Helpers discovered and cleaned up oil-polluted turtles. He suspects Lebanon’s entire south coast has been affected, Hamsah said.

In the past few days, an oil spill had wreaked havoc on Israel’s beaches.
The animal world was particularly hard hit. According to Israeli media reports, dozens of tons of oil had spilled into the sea off the coast of the country.
The reason was initially unclear. Israel closed the Mediterranean beaches to visitors on Sunday. Among other things, citizens were urged not to go swimming.
