Police break up unauthorized rally with rubber shot

 The  Basel-Stadt canton police broke up an unauthorized rally on Saturday afternoon at the Elisabethenanlage.  The  Basel public prosecutor announced this on Saturday evening.  The  canton police had withdrawn the originally issued rally permit for Saturday in advance and informed the applicants of this on Thursday.

Due to current developments, such as the resentment of the population in Corona times, the Basel non-Carnival and parallel events, they came to the conclusion that the security-relevant assessment of the situation justified this, as the authorities write. “ The  withdrawal is proportionate in view of the fact that the same applicants have been granted a rally four times in the past two weeks, of which three could or can be held.”

 The  Basel-Stadt canton police were present at the Elisabethenanlage from Saturday lunchtime and had clearly pointed out the withdrawal of the permit and the corona measures to people who wanted to form for the rally. Shortly before 2 p.m. a group broke up and wanted to march into the Aeschengraben, as the authorities report: «To prevent this, the canton police had to use rubber shot.  The n the unauthorized rally broke up. ”  The re were traffic obstructions in Nauenstrasse and public transport in the SBB train station area.
