A 34-year-old ski tourer was on the southeast flank of Piz Alv on Wednesday at an altitude of around 2900 m above sea level. M. has been buried by an avalanche. In the night from Saturday to Sunday, he succumbed to his serious injuries in the Graubünden cantonal hospital, as the Graubünden cantonal police announced on Monday.
The man was out with two other ski tourers last Wednesday. Shortly after 2 p.m. they were on the descent towards Lagalb.
The 34-year-old, who was in third place, solved the problem in a south-eastern flank at an altitude of around 2900 m. M. from an avalanche. This caught the tourer and completely buried him. His 42-year-old brother, who was driving in front of him, was also briefly swept away by the avalanche and was slightly injured.
Together with the third alpinist, he immediately began looking for the victim. After around 15 minutes, the two comrades were able to locate and dig him up. The y were supported by two rescue specialists from the SAC Bernina section as well as a Rega crew and a crew from HeliBernina AG. With serious injuries and in critical condition, the victim had to be flown over by Rega to the Cantonal Hospital of Graubünden in Chur. His slightly injured brother was flown to the hospital in Samedan for a check-up.
The alpine police of the Cantonal Police of Graubünden have started investigations into this avalanche accident.
