Because people who wear glasses look less in the eyes, they have a significantly lower risk of contracting the coronavirus. This is what an Indian study suggests.
The coronavirus is transmitted through the nose, mouth and eyes, among other things. Since the beginning of the pandemic, health experts have therefore advised not touching your own face as much as possible.
The virus could get to the face and from there into the body via hands contaminated with the coronavirus.
The New York Daily News. Because people who wear glasses grab each other’s eyes significantly less than people who don’t wear glasses. Accordingly, the risk of infection for people who wear glasses is only one third as high as they are to become infected with the coronavirus.
“Touching your own nose or mouth is significantly reduced when you wear a mask. But wearing a mask doesn’t protect the eyes, ”the study said. On the other hand, those who wear glasses for a long time – that is, according to the study for at least eight hours a day – also reduce this risk.
“Important source of infection”
“Rubbing your eyes with contaminated hands and rubbing them could be an important source of infection,” the study’s authors say. A direct infection via the eyes is “extremely rare,” according to the researchers. Infection droplets from the eyes could easily get into the body via the nose or mouth.
The 304 participants in the study were between ten and 80 years old and all had corona symptoms. 60 of them regularly wore glasses.
The Indian study is a preliminary study that has not yet been published. Before publication, the study has to go through the so-called peer review process. This means that it has to be checked by other researchers.
